Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Reconciliation Week
During Week 7, Ashdale Primary acknowledged Reconciliation Week.
We were very fortunate to welcome back Alton Walley, a Whadjuk, Wilman, Kaneang Noongar man from the South-West of Western Australia to lead a whole school assembly. Alton started with an acknowledgement of country, shared an indigenous story about how working together we can achieve more and finished the assembly with a smoking ceremony.
School Board Meeting
Our recent school board meeting was engaging for all those in attendance. It included:
- Building Teacher Instructional Practice – Introducing Daily Reviews.
- Joh Gobby presented the research on how skills and concepts are moved from short term memory to long term memory and how Daily Reviews support the revision of previously taught content.
- Joh also shared the process Ashdale has taken to support teachers in using these in their classrooms.
- School Updates
- 20 Year celebration events and planning
- Planting of the Miyawaki Forest in Term 3
- Ashdale Cluster Branding
- Board members engaged in discussion about the operation of the cluster and the benefits of being a part of the Ashdale Cluster
School Board meeting minutes can be found on the Ashdale Primary website at the following link:

School Photo Day is Approaching
School Photo Day is approaching!
Fotomakers WA will be visiting Ashdale Primary School on the FIRST WEEK BACK AFTER THE HOLIDAYS on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th of July 2024. Every student will receive an envelope with their name and other individual information (ie. Unique Access Key for online ordering) on a personalised envelope.
Parents are asked to complete the envelope with their order and select their payment choice (either cash or cheque inside the envelope or if ordering online clearly showing the online receipt number on the front of the envelope). Every student must return their envelope on photo day with their order clearly marked, even where payment is made in one envelope for multiple siblings. See your envelope for more information.
Spare envelopes will be held at the school office for any new students or for those who have lost or forgotten their envelope but still wish to purchase photos.
ALL students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records. A second chance to purchase photos will be offered once delivery is made of all initial orders.
The school will be offering a sibling photo service during your photography day. If you would like to have a sibling photo taken, please collect a ‘sibling envelope’ from the school office.
Fotomakers WA offer a 100% money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package.
Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to admin@fotomakerswa.com.au or tel: 1300 876 920
Reconciliation Week
On Wednesday of week 7, Ashdale Primary School held a whole school assembly for Reconciliation week. Ashdale welcomed back special guest, Alton Walley a Whadjuk, Wilman, Kaneang Noongar man from the South-West of Western Australia. Alton did an Acknowledgement of Country and through storytelling and Noongar language, spoke to students and staff about Reconciliation and what it means to be an ally. This was followed by a smoking ceremony (blessing and show of respect for each other) conducted by Alton.
Over the week it was great to see classes engaging in activities that shared Aboriginal culture and developed student understanding of what reconciliation means. These activities are supporting the work that Ashdale Primary is doing to build cultural understanding with our students and the community in the drafting of our Reconciliation Action Plan.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories and cultures and explore how we can each contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. NRW is held across the same dates each year (27 May to 3 June) and commemorates two significant milestones - the successful 1967 Referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
The theme for NRW 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue.
Ashdale Primary School Former Student Alessandro Circati
Some of our current Year 6 students were lucky enough to meet former Ashdale Primary student Alessandro Circati at the Australia vs Palestine game at HBF stadium. Alessandro was making his second appearance for the Socceroos, where he helped them keep a clean sheet in their 5-0 win against Palestine.

School Voluntary Contributions (including P & C Contribution)
Have you paid the voluntary contribution $60/student and P & C Levy $40/family?
We encourage payments via the Qkr! app – this is a very simple and quick process and alleviates the need for busy parents to come into the office or send money in with students.
Instructions on how to download the App are available on our website from the link below or see the Qkr! Tip article below.
- Remember to change the profile (year, LAs etc) for your children when first accessing Qkr! for the year
- Alternative payment methods (cash/eftpos/credit card) are available through the front office.
- Families may pay the Voluntary Contribution in instalments.

A Message from the School Health Nurse
Influenza
Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.
People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.
Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require school work for your child contact the school to prepare some for you to collect.
The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.
Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu?
The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu.
Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program.
Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children.
Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year.
The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation or contact your GP or Immunisation Clinic.
P&C News
We are approaching the midway point of the year and the P&C have been very busy!
Ashdale primary students in year 3 and above have been granted a fantastic opportunity by Your Move and the City of Wanneroo. They will be participating in a "Bike education workshop" on Thursday, June 20 after school. This workshop aims to enhance bike riding skills, impart knowledge on navigating traffic, and educate children on being bike-savvy. Limited spots are available, so interested parents are encouraged to sign up at the office promptly.
Encouraging students to walk or ride to school is an excellent way to incorporate exercise into their daily routine. For those unable to do so, consider parking further away and embracing a short 3 to 5 minute walk. This initiative not only promotes health but also helps alleviate traffic congestion around the school.
On the 25th May the undercover area was transformed into a 2000’s time warp by the P&C to celebrate 20 years of Ashdale Primary. Our Quiz Night was a resounding success, raising a substantial amount for shade sails for the ninja playground (which we hear should be starting construction in the school holidays!). Heartfelt thanks are extended to all sponsors for their generous contributions. Additionally, a special acknowledgment goes out to the dedicated volunteers whose efforts ensured the night's triumph.
Preparations are underway for the Father's Day stall at the end of August. An appeal will be made in early August for volunteers to sign up. The stall's success is heavily reliant on the support of volunteers, highlighting their indispensable role in the school community. It’s a really fun way to get involved with the P&C and watch the joy on our student’s faces when they get to choose a gift for their special father figures.
Our next P&C meeting is in week 2 of Term 3, Tuesday 30th July at 7pm in the staff room. We hope to see both new and old faces there!
